Our Story

Our founder Maggie Keswick Jencks used her own experience of having cancer to create a different type of cancer care.

The first Maggie’s opened in Edinburgh in 1996, and we now have a network of 24 centres in the UK and four abroad.

Our founder Maggie left a legacy for other people with cancer just like her.

A gift in your will to Maggie’s means future generations can always turn to us for cancer support.

You can support us directly by helping as a volunteer, all while adding new skills or experiences to your CV.

Our fundraising events always need ‘hands on deck’ to make everything runs smoothly. You can also get involved at our centres or in one of our offices.

We have lots of ideas and materials to help you plan the perfect event or activity.

Here you’ll find fundraising inspiration, information, and everything you need to make your event a success.

Your donation will help people with cancer and their families get the vital support they need when their world has been turned upside-down.

Professional support

Maggie’s is an independent charity which works alongside the NHS to offer expert care and support to people with cancer.

Our centres can be found in the grounds of major cancer hospitals across the UK, and we have excellent relationships with our partner hospitals.

In our centres psychologists, cancer support specialists and benefits advisors are available to support anyone with cancer as well as their friends and family. We also work with experts who provide exercise sessions, nutrition advice, and much more.

We are here with practical and emotional support when anyone with cancer is dealing with money worries, stress, depression, treatment side effects, and relationship and family issues.

Our support has been shown to improve people’s physical and emotional wellbeing, and to help them take control when cancer turns life upside down.

Understanding every person’s circumstances is central to what we do, and means we can guide everyone to the support that will help them most.

A friendly space

Every Maggie’s is thoughtfully designed to be calming and welcoming – a place to escape from the clinical environment of the hospital.

There are no reception desks and no clocks – instead, we have comfy sofas and plenty of time. We work with some of the best architects in the world to design our centres because we know that light, colour, and a connection to nature can help people feel better.

Our centres have large open spaces for group activities and a kitchen table to chat with other people.

We also make sure there are peaceful corners and beautiful gardens for quiet moments and a chance to gather your thoughts.

Maggie’s is here for anyone with cancer, whatever kind of cancer, and whatever stage they’re at. We’re also here to support their family and friends.

All our support is free, and no appointment or referral is necessary.

There’s also no time limit on our support – we’re here for as long as we’re needed.

We rely on your kindness so we can provide the best possible cancer support and continue to build more centres across the UK.
