Shipyard Scottie
DescriptionMy design is a colourful and decorative response to the shipbuilding industry of Glasgow as it would appear at nighttime. I have based this work on the John Brown and Company shipyard at Clydebank with its many cantilever and gantry cranes. The left facing side of the sculpture design depicts the building of RMS Queen Mary in the 1930s and the right facing side shows the building of RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 in the 1960s. I am inspired by subject matter which is not intrinsically beautiful but allows me to delve beneath the surface to reveal the hidden artistic harmonies. The uglier the subject the more I strive for beauty hence my submission of an industrial shipyard at night, which many might perceive as ugly, abstracted into line, shape and tone.
